Itinerary:
Culture and Art tourism of Malabar region: 5 Nights/6days
Day 1: Arrive Mangalore airport. Transfer to Bekal Muliyar Home stay at Muliyar. (2 hours 45 minutes).
On arrival at Mangalore airport, you will proceed to Bekal Muliyar Home stay. You may rest for some time and then you may set out to explore the Farm. Here you shall experience village life like, areca nut & coconut plantations, vegetable gardens, spice plantation, paddy cultivation, organic farming, mini dairy, bee keeping, freshwater aquaculture, river bath, etc. Your host will tell you a lot of tales related to local culture and lifestyle which you shall certainly enjoy. At this destination, if you have ample of time in hand, you can go even for a short trekking through forest. Have a homemade dinner and you may retire.

Day 2: Muliyar to Bekal Fort and then for Thayyam experience.
You may opt to get up early in the morning and then may have another round of farm. You are bound to feel fresh after this excursion. After breakfast, you shall proceed to Bekal Fort. Shivappa Nayaka has built this Fort in 1650 AD and is the largest fort in Kerala spreading over 40 acres. After lunch, you shall visit one or two Ashrams in this area and immerse yourself in the spiritual experience.
If time permits, a short visit to wood carver would prove very interesting as you shall meet and talk to the artist and see his art.
The main highlight of today is Thayyam experience. You shall be taken to a temple place where Thayyam is organized. People in this area regard Thayyam as a channel to reach out to God. This is a thousand year old religious ritual in the form of dance. People seek blessings from Thayyam. The point to note is that Thayyam is not a stage performance but a religious ritual running in the families residing here. It is performed with all seriousness and devotion. The tourists need to go where it is going to be performed and witness the same. This is going to be a wonderful experience for you. Overnight stay at mud cottages equipped with modern facilities at Cheemeni. Day 3: Get acquainted with unique topography of Kerala.
After breakfast, proceed for Payyannur which is only 45 minutes away. Payyannur is a major town in Malabar offering some special experiences. You can have kayaking or boating here, visit a mangrove – rather navigate through a mangrove and cross the water body which lies in-between two districts of Kerala. Once you cross over, you also get to see the sea. Such unique topography you can find in Kerala only.
Also, here you shall get to see the place where crude metal pieces are transformed into beautiful artifacts and idols. This is called bell metal work and it is always on ‘on order’ basis. So if you are lucky, you shall get to see the whole process as well. This will be memorable experience for art and handicrafts lovers.

Day 4: On the way to Kannur
After breakfast, we proceed to a home stay at Azhikkal (50 minutes). If you express your wish beforehand, you may have a peep in an authentic Ayurveda resort facility. After reaching Azhakkal, you can have a look at Hand looms. Also, you can visit estuary and a fishing harbor to witness the daily life and huzzle buzzle at the hourbour. Afterwards arrive at the home stay and settle down.
After lunch and a little bit of rest, you may proceed for Kannur which is a major city in Malabar and has a rich history. The Royal family here has an extremely old legacy from 13th Century. It is fascinating to have a look at this historical place. There are few famous temples as well. Payyambalam beach here may remind you of beaches in Mumbai. A round in Kannur market will give you the feel of the city.
If you are lucky, you may get to see a Kalaripayyattu court – a ring of Keralite martial arts where the martial artists practice. Overnight at Azhikkal.

Day 5: Water Water everywhere..
After early morning excursion at the beach and then breakfast, you may proceed to a beautiful abode at the corner of a pond for your next stay ( 2 and ½ hours). This is a place where all three water bodies – a pond, a river and sea – exist in close proximity. A tastefully made cottage is bound to rejuvenate you after the time you shall spend here. Lush green raw lawns and coconut trees around add to the beauty of the place.
You may spend the day here simply enjoying the beauty of the place, have a round of fishermens’ village and see their daily activity or visit a nearby turtle hatchery and temple. If you wish, your host will arrange for a small pedal boat for you to navigate in the pond water. Those who wish, may go to pond for fishing with a fishing rod. Fresh sea food cooked at home is the specialty of this place. The place is bound to make you forget the concept of time.

A beautiful picture will emerge in front on your eyes when fishing boats will go past you on the backdrop of rising Sun. This must be a coveted moment for the photographer in you. Afterwards, have a long morning walk on the golden beach with clean sand and if you are lucky, you may get the company of white cranes for the walk.
